We got ‘In the BUFF’ with fashion photographer, Nathan Richards! Shedding light on his inspirations, style, and more, Richards shares with us his influences, creative process, and how he went from hobby to profession with Paul C. Buff, Inc.
What sparked your interest in photography?
I think one of the things that sparked my interest in photography is art. I’ve always loved creating in some form, so creating fashion images felt natural.
What made you choose Paul C. Buff, Inc. for your studio strobe needs?
To be perfectly honest with you, it was the price. When I graduated from school in 2016, I didn’t have a lot of money saved. With starting my Fashion Photography career from scratch, I knew I had to be money conscience. So I bought 2 Einstein heads. I still use those 2 Einsteins on almost every shoot I produce. I still continue to choose Paul C. Buff for my lighting.
When did photography turn into a business for you?
Photography turned into a business for me as soon as I graduated school the end of 2016. Towards the end of school, I started getting a few smaller clients. That made it possible to go straight into my career.
Do you have a “Go To” lighting setup?
I don’t really have a “go to” setup since almost every job needs it’s own thing. However, I’ve been shooting with a single umbrella directly above the subject a bit lately. This creates a really contrasty light which I’ve been liking a lot the past month or two.
What’s your creative process leading up to a shoot?
Leading up to a shoot, I like to pull images from photographers I respect to give myself some visuals for lighting. Once I have decided on the lighting, I discuss my vision with the team. From there, we setup the studio or location and have fun….. I also drink a lot of coffee.
What/who influences you and your work?
Honestly, looking at Instagram influences my work. Instagram makes it possible for me to see the next season’s designs seconds after they are released on the runway. This makes it possible for my work to stay relevant no matter what part of the world I’m in. I like to stay informed in this career that I love.
What would be your dream photoshoot?
Probably photographing Kate Moss or Cara Delevingne for British Vogue.
Is there a photographer, either past or present, that inspires you?
This is always a hard question for me to answer because I’m inspired by so many photographers out there! But if I have to choose, I would say either Richard Avedon or Patrick Demarchelier.
Do you have a favorite photograph you’ve taken so far in your career?
My next one.
What advice would you give a photographer that is just starting out with off-camera flash?
Don’t be afraid to play around and break some of the rules. Playing around is, in my opinion, the best way to learn what light does.
What are your goals for the future?
I move to London, U.K. this year, so my goals are to continue to have a successful career as a fashion photographer there…. and to photograph Kate Moss.
